Why DigiSET
The DigiSET project responds to the growing need to reshape European education in line with the Digital Education Action Plan 2021–2027 and the 2030 Digital Compass. The pandemic accelerated the awareness that teachers must be equipped with advanced digital and sustainability competences to ensure inclusive and future-oriented learning.
DigiSET aims to develop the figure of the Digitally Sustainable European Teacher, capable of integrating Artificial Intelligence, Web 3.0, and Open Educational Resources (OERs) into innovative and ethical teaching practices.
Four main needs identified
Need 01
Bridging the digital skills gap to ensure that teachers can effectively use emerging technologies and lead digital innovation in their classrooms.
Need 02
Enhancing teacher training and professional development to address shortages and guarantee equal access to high-quality, cross-border learning opportunities.
Need 03
Integrating sustainability with digital transformation to promote green competences and educate students as responsible and environmentally aware citizens.
Need 04
Promoting ethical and gender-sensitive use of AI to prevent technological bias and foster equality and inclusiveness in digital education.
Project objectives
The general objective of the DigiSET project is to enhance European educators’ digital skills, enabling them to effectively integrate digital tools and innovative pedagogies. By fostering collaboration, DigiSET empowers teachers to drive the digital transformation of European education. Educators will be equipped to create and utilize digital resources, AI, and contribute to a sustainable digital education ecosystem, improving educational quality, inclusivity, and access across Europe.
Training programme for digitally sustainable teachers
To formulate the training programme of the "Digitally Sustainable European Teacher" in English, aimed at providing teachers with the knowledge, skills and competences to create, use and adapt Open Educational Resources (OERs).
OpenSource technological platform
To implement the technological platforms of the Community of Practice, ensuring teachers' upskilling, engagement and knowledge retention across all levels of education and across European countries.
Training and certification of 700 teachers
To train and certify 700 teachers as Digitally Sustainable European Teachers, at least at conceptual learning phase, with 50% pre-service and 50% in-service teachers equally distributed among countries.
Interdisciplinary virtual community of practice
To establish a structured organizational model that facilitates interoperability between different European countries, interdisciplinarity and knowledge management of acquired and developed knowledge by teachers.
Knowledge management and academy exploitation
To establish the knowledge management process through which the community of practice learns from itself to develop and disseminate digital learning through OERs.
Quality assurance and evaluation
To ensure that the project and its developed activities bring the expected and planned benefits and quality is assured through structured evaluation mechanisms.
Target groups
DigiSET targets teachers at EQF levels 1 to 5, including teachers in training, newly qualified teachers, in-service teachers, school advisors, HEI teachers, and trainers in continuous education.Direct target
Teachers from EQF level 1 to EQF level 5, with 50% pre-service and 50% in-service teachers, distributed equally among the 8 partner countries.
- Teachers in training (pre-service)
- Newly qualified teachers
- In-service teachers
- School advisors and HEI teachers
- Trainers in continuous education
Indirect target
The project's impact extends beyond direct participants to benefit the wider education ecosystem and society.
- Training providers for pre-service and continuing professional development
- Educational institutions (schools, public authorities, policymakers, researchers)
- Citizens and communities
Methodology and innovation
DigiSET is designed around a three-stage innovative structure, fostering interdisciplinary cooperation among European teachers through advanced technologies and collaborative frameworks.
Conceptual learning
Training modules covering Web 3.0, AI generative algorithms, Blockchain, and the Metaverse. Teachers who complete 80% of the training and pass assessments receive proof of participation.
Experiential training in mobility
Teachers collaboratively develop OERs focused on: Gender unbiased AI teaching practices, System thinking for sustainability, and AI for adaptive learning and inclusion of students with learning difficulties.
Implementation and reflection
Selected teachers implement and test developed materials in educational settings. Teachers maintain structured Reflective Journals and share findings through the Community of Practice.

Partner institutions enhance their capacity for digital education by adopting DigiSET training resources and methodology. Institutions formalize cooperation through the DigiSET Academy MoU, embedding the modules into teacher training curricula. The network evolves into a stable European alliance of teacher education providers.
Policy and systemic impact
Policymakers and education authorities gain access to structured evidence and good practices in digital sustainability education. DigiSET outputs become reference tools in policy frameworks aligned with the Digital Education Action Plan and the European Education Area, contributing to the harmonization of teacher standards.
Social and environmental impact
DigiSET promotes inclusive and eco-conscious teaching, encouraging equality, accessibility, and digital citizenship. These practices spread through schools and training institutions, raising awareness of sustainable lifestyles. In the long term, DigiSET supports a wider societal shift towards environmentally responsible and socially inclusive education systems.
